How are the shipping costs calculated?
Every courier prices a parcel on the same handful of inputs. Knowing them makes any quote easy to read — and easy to bring down.
Actual weight
What the parcel weighs on the scale, including its box and padding. Couriers check this on their own scales, so the figure you are charged is the weight they measure, not the one you typed in.
Volumetric weight
Space costs money on a plane. Couriers work out length x width x height in centimetres, divided by 5000, and charge on whichever is greater — that figure or the actual weight.
Destination
Couriers group countries into zones. Neighbouring European countries sit in the cheapest zones; long-haul destinations such as Australia or Canada cost more for the same box.
Service level
Express services fly direct and arrive in a few days. Economy services travel by road or consolidated air freight and cost noticeably less if you are not in a hurry.
Where it ships from
The country and postcode a parcel leaves from decide which courier network and rate card apply. The same route can cost a different amount depending on where it starts, and some couriers add a surcharge for remote collection or delivery areas.
What is inside
Insurance is priced on the declared value, and restricted goods such as liquids or batteries can only travel on certain services, which narrows your options.
How to measure and weigh your parcel
A quote is only as good as the numbers you put into it. Measure the parcel once it is packed and ready to go.
Measure length, width and height
Measure the packed parcel, not the item inside it. Use the outside of the box in centimetres: the longest side is the length, then the width, then the height. Measure at the widest points, because a bulging box is charged on its bulge.
Round up, not down
Round each measurement up to the next whole centimetre and the weight up to the next half kilogram. Couriers round upwards when they bill, and many price in steps of 0.5 kg or 1 kg, so rounding down is how a quote ends up lower than the final price.
Packaging counts towards the weight
The courier weighs what is handed over: the item plus the box, padding, tape and any filler. Packaging also makes the box bigger, which raises the volumetric weight. Weigh the parcel fully packed, and use the smallest sturdy box that fits.
How to pay less for shipping
A few habits lower the price of almost any shipment, whichever courier you use.
- Compare couriers. The same parcel can cost noticeably different amounts from one courier to the next, so check more than one before you book.
- Choose economy instead of express. If you can wait a few extra days, an economy service is usually cheaper than express.
- Use smaller packaging. You pay on the greater of actual and volumetric weight, so a box with less empty space costs less.
- Combine items into one parcel. One parcel pays one base charge instead of several, which is usually the biggest saving when you are sending more than one item.
Customs duties and taxes on international parcels
The shipping price covers carriage only. When a parcel crosses a border, the destination country can also charge import duty, which is a tax on the goods based on their value and type, and import VAT or sales tax on top.
Those charges are set by the customs authority, not by the courier. They are usually collected on delivery or before the parcel is released, often with a courier handling fee added. Thresholds differ from country to country, so check the rules for the destination before you buy.

How much does it cost to ship a parcel internationally?
There is no single price. It depends on the weight and size of the parcel, how far it is going, how fast you need it and which courier you pick. A light parcel inside Europe costs a fraction of a heavy one sent across the world, and the quickest way to know is to compare quotes from several couriers for your exact parcel.
Is the shipping calculator free to use?
Yes. You do not need an account, and there is no charge for a quote. You only pay when you actually send a parcel.
What is volumetric weight?
Couriers charge for the space a parcel takes up as well as what it weighs. Volumetric weight is length x width x height in centimetres divided by 5000. If that figure is higher than the actual weight, it is the one you pay for — which is why a big box of light goods can cost more than a small heavy one.
Are customs duties included in the shipping price?
No. The shipping price covers carriage only. Import duty and VAT are charged separately by the customs authority in the destination country, and are usually collected by the courier on delivery. Use our duty calculator to estimate them before you buy.
Why do shipping prices differ between couriers?
Each courier runs its own network and sets its own rate card, zones, fuel surcharges and volume discounts, and each is stronger on some routes than others. Faster services and extras such as insurance cost more, so two quotes for the same parcel are rarely identical.
